It was the second day that Oluyemisi Adebayo, 54, was caring for Naomi Mondesire at the child’s home on Memphis Ave. near 145th Ave. in Rosedale. The premature toddler was born at just 25 weeks and needed a tracheotomy tube to breathe. Naomi spent her first year in the hospital, her grandmother said, and still needed to be fed through a tube. Around 7:25 p.m. on Saturday , Adebayo, a licensed practical nurse, submerged little Naomi in water so hot that it actually burned pieces of skin off the child, according to authorities. The young girl died Monday ....

One of the survivors of the Ode-Irele methanol poisoning in Ibadan, Mr. Olorunwa Jero, yesterday, recounted his ordeal in the throes of death. Jero, a father of six, who is a vulcaniser, narrated: “By the time I was brought here, I had gone blind. I could not identify my wife, I could not identify anything. I did not even know when I arrived here. “But I thank God and the management and staff of University College Hospital, UCH, for bailing me out. I can see all of you here clearly. I can even identify the clothes each one of you is putting on.” The victim commended the teaching hospital for its timely medical intervention which he said saved his life. Meantime, UCH management, yesterday, confirmed that five victims of Ode-Irele methanol poisoning were responding to treatment. Twenty-two hours after the massive earthquake that demolished  buildings and killed more than 5,000 people in Nepal, a 4-month-old boy  was rescued from the rubble.  The boy, named Sonit Awal, was buried under the rubble of his family’s house in Bhaktapur, near Kathmandu, when it collapsed during Saturday’s earthquake. According to a story in local newspaper Kathmandu Today, translated by the Guardian , rescuers tried until midnight to extract the baby from bricks and other debris that had fallen on him during the quake, but were unsuccessful. The next morning, after the child’s father said he heard the baby crying throughout the night, the rescue team returned, and by 10 a.m....

Bumble Bee Foods and two managers were charged by Los Angeles prosecutors yesterday with violating safety regulations in the death of a worker who was cooked in an industrial oven with tons of tuna.   Jose Melena was performing maintenance in a 35-foot-long oven at the company’s Santa Fe Springs plant before dawn Oct. 11, 2012, when a co-worker, who mistakenly believed Melena was in the bathroom, filled the pressure cooker with 12,000 pounds of canned tuna and it was turned on. When a supervisor noticed Melena, 62, was missing, an announcement was made on the intercom and employees searched for him in the facility and parking lot, according to a report by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health. The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos state Ministry of Information Communication Technology, ICT, Mrs Nike Animashaun, has revealed plans by the state government to provide Wi-Fi services to residents of the state. Speaking at the state ministerial briefing in Alausa recently, Mrs Animashaun said the first phase of the Wi-Fi connectivity would be installed in parks within the state. She listed the first parks to benefit from the WiFi installment as Oshodi, Alausa and Ajegunle parks. “The Wi-Fi services will be in some of the parks in the state and when it is deployed, residents of Lagos State would be able to access Wi-Fi in some of the parks,” she said But who goes to these parks? Mrs Animashaun said that the state government came up with the idea to stimulate and encourage the interest of children in science and technology. She however did not state if the Wi-Fi connection will be free of charge.

 Police are yet to make any arrests following the burglary, which took place near Chelsea's training ground Ex-Chelsea star Michael Essien's Surrey home has been raided by burglars, making off with his flash Range Rover Vogue. Police confirmed that the £75,000 vehicle was stolen earlier this month, on April 7. The actor was visiting his family in Texas, where he is believed to have shot himself on their front porch Thursday. Sweeten starred in  Everybody Loves Raymond  from 1996 to 2005, playing Geoffrey Barone .  His twin brother,  Sullivan ,played Michael Barone, while their sister  Madylin  played Ally Barone. The CBS series starred  Ray Romano  as their onscreen father.  “At this time I would like to encourage everyone to reach out to the ones you love," Madylin Sweeten  wrote on her Facebook page  Thursday. "Let them have no doubt of what they mean to you.”

Former Stationary stores and Green Eagles player, Peter Anieke has died. He died April 20th after a prolonged battle with acute rheumatism and arthritis. He was 68 years old. Peter, known for his great defence skills and goal scoring, started his football career in 1967, playing for local football leagues before moving into the National team in '70s where he played for the National team. He was nicknamed ‘Eusebio of Africa’ for the countless number of goals he scored while he played professional football.  He is survived by a wife and 6 children. May his soul rest in peace Amen.

 Hours after two groups protested in its Abuja and Benin offices against the violent killing of foreigners in its home country, South Africa, MTN Nigeria on Monday warned that should there be attacks on its facilities, it might be forced to close shop. And 99 per cent of its over 6,000 workforce in the country, who are Nigerians, would be thrown into the labour market. According to the Corporate Service Executive, MTN Nigeria, Mr. Wale Goodluck, there are only 12 expatriates working for the company in the country, compared to a workforce of 6,000 Nigerians.   According to the Minister of State for Health, Mr Fidelis Nwankwo,  the disease is not in anyway related to the Ebola virus disease as was earlier speculated. The outbreak of a mysterious disease in Ode-Irele, Ondo state which has claimed the lives of about 18 people has been attributed to the the consumption of contaminated alcohol (gin). This was revealed in a joint press statement given by the Federal Ministry of Health and World Health Organization (WHO).
